Clinicians working on the firing line with the wounded families of clients experiencing major behavioral health disorders often struggle to engage family members in a way that promotes sustainable system change. Frequently, we get caught up in the family’s identified patient (IP) myth: “Fix him and all will be fine.” Similarly, as family members move toward embracing their own work, projections onto the clinician fuel counter-transference reactions which can derail the work or weaken therapeutic alliances (including with the patient).

Join Dr. Kenneth Perlmutter and a group of gifted colleagues for three days of experiential, didactic, theoretical and practical learning to achieve these objectives:

  • Expand your repertoire of family programming and family therapy offerings/techniques for your agency or your office-based practice
  • Deepen theoretical grounding in Family Systems approaches and interventions
  • Successfully engage problematic family members: clarify boundaries and limits
  • Harness counter-transference reactions rather than be thrown off by them

Specifically designed for psychologists, RNs, MFTs, LCSWs, LPCs, or counselors working with clients experiencing Addiction, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma or Disordered Eating and their families. Join us… we’ll learn, laugh, challenge each other and grow.

Dr. Perlmutter has spent his nearly 30 year career working with individuals and families struggling with complex psychological problems including addiction. In 2008 he founded The Family Recovery Institute to train clinicians and provide help to families employing his model of Stress-Induced Impaired Coping. He is the Founder of the Family Recovery Institute, Credential Chair and Board Member for the Int’l Assn of Family Addiction Professionals (IAFAP), and is a former faculty member at SF State and CSU East Bay. His upcoming book, “It Stops with Me: Bringing Hope and Healing to Families Devastated by Addiction or Mental Illness” will be published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2019.
